Well-Being Tips for Clinical Teams

The holiday season can be especially demanding for healthcare professionals, with increased patient loads, staffing challenges, and long hours. At Centene, we know that supporting our members begins with supporting our clinicians. This month, we’re focusing on Caring for the Caregiver—practical ways to find balance, recharge, and protect your mental health.

One of our featured clinicians, Andrew J., Senior LTSS Service Care Manager, shared a few personal strategies that have helped him stay grounded.

Set clear boundaries.

His top tip: “Don’t think about work once your day has ended until your next shift begins.”

Giving your mind permission to fully disconnect is one of the easiest ways to prevent burnout. Whether it’s a mental reset or a hard stop on email notifications, boundaries help create space to return refreshed.

Shift out of “work mode.”

He adds: “Turn your work brain off and focus on home and personal life once you’re done for the day.”

During the holidays—when home life becomes even fuller—this shift can make a big difference. Things like going for a walk, unplugging from notifications, listening to music, or spending time with family and friends can help you decompress and recharge.

Make changes when needed.

For Andrew, improving balance meant reevaluating his role altogether: “Changing jobs from an at-home position to my current role working on the road was necessary for my mental health.”

After moving from a fully remote role to one with more time in the field, he found a healthier rhythm and greater job satisfaction.

Lean on supportive leadership.

Andrew credits his manager for reinforcing healthy habits: “My manager helps me stay balanced and always encourages us to take the time off we’ve earned.”

At Centene, we believe time to rest is not only important—it’s essential.

Don’t be afraid to explore new opportunities.

Andrew’s advice: “If you’re unhappy, it’s okay to try something new. You became comfortable once, and you can become comfortable again in a role that fits you better.”

Growth often starts with a moment of courage.

At Centene, we believe caring for caregivers starts with workplace support, balance, and opportunities to grow. As you move through the holiday season, we hope these reminders help you find the space and energy you need.
