Leveraging Skills and Forging Careers for Veterans
Centene is proud to be named to the 2022 Military Times Best for Vets list of employers for our efforts to recruit, retain and support service members, military spouses and caregivers. Learn how Centene partners with organizations to hire veterans and military spouses. This blog post was written by Brian P., Manager Centene Technologies.
In January 2022, Centene’s cybersecurity team forged a partnership with a local cybersecurity non-profit, CyberUp, to launch a new program called Cyber Jumpstart which trains an entire cohort and places them on a Centene IT team.
For this first major effort, we focused on the military veteran community and chartered a dedicated class for up to 15 veterans and veteran spouses. This training provided them with an opportunity to function as apprentices within the many CyberSecurity functional areas at Centene.
Each apprentice was assigned to a mentor within a functional area (e.g., Perimeter Security) and given job shadowing as well as hands-on training to learn in a real-world business environment. The apprenticeships are typically 6 months to a year-long and may involve assignments in different functional areas. For example, students may spend 3 months in Perimeter Security followed by 3 months in Cloud Security.

CyberUp helps individuals begin careers in cybersecurity through a Department of Labor-approved apprenticeship program, with a focus on veterans, women, and people of color. The organization provides free CompTIA Security+ training and certification followed by an apprenticeship in an entry-level cyber role that includes a paid job, additional training, and mentorship.
